Ghanaian journalist Gary Al-Smith has praised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for personally intervening to ensure the Accra Sports Stadium hosts the crucial match against Sudan and equally criticised him for his deafening silence on national issues.
President Akufo-Addos’s swift action saved Ghana from the embarrassment of playing a home game outside the country for the first time in 67 years.
“The President was so annoyed at the potential disgrace… that he personally took charge of high-level talks,” Al-Smith wrote on Facebook.
However, Gary Al-Smith questioned why the president is unperturbed about the galamsey menace which has destroyed several water bodies across the country.
“What the heck will it take to get such urgency in the matter of galamsey?” he wondered.
Ghana has struggled with illegal mining, or galamsey, which threatens the country’s forest reserves, agricultural lands, and water resources.
Experts emphasize that addressing galamsey requires inclusive growth and a multi-faceted approach. The agricultural sector is on the brink of collapse due to galamsey, prompting urgent calls for action.
Meanwhile, Organised Labour has announced a nationwide strike starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, in response to the government’s failure to address the illicit mining, locally called galamsey menace.
“The environmental destruction caused by illegal mining is a direct result of the government’s failure to act decisivel,”t Organised Labour said in a statement
Organised Labour is calling on the government to take concrete steps to halt the destructive effects of galamsey, including declaring a state of emergency in affected areas, halting mining in forest reserves, and establishing special courts to prosecute offenders.
