Host of the Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Dr. Randy Abbey, has condemned the security forces and enforcers for their inaction in combating the scourge of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. The environmental and social consequences of this illegal activity have long been a concern, yet the authorities seem reluctant to take decisive action. In a scathing critique on his show on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, Dr. Randy Abbey lamented the glaring inconsistency in law enforcement. He pointed out that police readily crack down on minor infractions, such as marijuana smokers in their hideouts, while turning a blind eye to the destructive operations of galamsey miners. “We can sit and argue all we want, the evidence is out there, and the impunity to the extent that Accra-Kumasi Highway, people can have the nerves,” he noted. “You have the security agencies in the municipalities, people can mine close to the Accra-Kumasi Highway, just five meters from the highway, are we saying that our security agencies as decentralised as there are, you can have such activities happen and they don’t know?” Dr. Randy Abbey stated, noting that” even small small two by four ghetto, where they sell weed, they know there.”
