If only it were true—at least in terms of the weather—that what occurs in Vegas stays in Vegas.
According to the city's National Weather Service office, Sin City's high temperature of 111 degrees on Thursday was the earliest date that Las Vegas has ever recorded such a blistering temperature. However, the worst portion of summer has arrived in California and the Southwest two weeks before the season really begins, so the record-breaking numbers are not the only thing happening in the gambling mecca.

Several major metro regions in the area are listed by the National Weather Service as being at "Max HeatRisk" on Thursday and Friday. Las Vegas is in the "extreme'' category, and Phoenix, Fresno, California, Albuquerque, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas, just below at "major.'' It's expected to get above 110 degrees in Phoenix and Las Vegas.
The prediction center for the weather service stated that "some areas of hazardous heat may persist into next week." In parts of the Great Basin, the Southwest, and interior California, record-breaking daily high temperatures are predicted.
Over 100 degree temperatures and even higher in certain regions were predicted for Thursday afternoon across California, much of which was under excessive heat advisories. The weather agency advised against strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest months and advised against leaving kids or pets in unattended cars.

There were dangers in many parts of the West. Thursday afternoon highs in Utah were predicted to reach 104–108 degrees, making the weather extremely hot. In the meantime, temperatures in some areas of Nevada might reach 114 or 116 degrees. It is predicted that Southern Texas, including El Paso and the Rio Grande Valley, would experience triple digit temperatures into the afternoon after weeks of abnormally high temperatures.
