UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron |
According to the Foreign Office (FCDO), UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron was tricked into taking a phone call from a person posing as former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
"Whilst the video call clearly appeared to be with Mr Poroshenko, following the conversation the foreign secretary became suspicious," the official stated.
The caller went on to ask for contact information, and Lord Cameron stopped answering.
The spokesman said that the "brief" call happened "recent days," but he did not provide further details regarding the identity of the perpetrator or the method by which they got in touch with Lord Cameron.
The FCDO stated that it made the exchange's details public because of concern that it would be "manipulated".
From 2014 to 2019, Petro Poroshenko presided over Ukraine as president.

It's not the first time Lord Cameron has fallen victim to a hoax call.
In 2015, Downing Street was forced to review security procedures after a bogus caller was put through to him when he was prime minister.
No 10 said the caller claimed to be Robert Hannigan, who was director of government monitoring agency GCHQ at the time.
Lord Cameron ended the call when it became clear it was a hoax and no sensitive information was disclosed
