Nigerian students are choking to death due to generator fumes - reports

 

In Nigeria's oil-rich Bayelsa state, at least seven university students have perished after allegedly breathing in fumes from a generator in a music studio. It is reported that the young men worked through the night on Monday and slept in the closed studio while the generator was still running. Although authorities said investigations are ongoing, it is assumed that they drowned from carbon monoxide emissions.

Due to insufficient power supplies, a large number of Nigerian households and businesses rely on generators that run on gasoline or diesel. Tuesday morning saw the discovery of six bodies; one unconscious victim was sent to a neighboring hospital but subsequently passed away. 

Local media released an article. When locals looked through the studio window and saw the victims lying splayed across the floor, they became alarmed. Once the remains were removed from the Amarata district of Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa state, police arrived and roped off the scene.
Police spokeswoman Musa Mohammed told the Super Top Trends that while investigations are ongoing, carbon monoxide poisoning from generator emissions is a plausible explanation.The victims were Niger Delta University (NDU), a state-owned institution in Amassoma, undergraduate students who relied on the music recording industry to fund their education. In Nigeria, the largest oil producer in Africa, generator fumes have killed people before.2009.

In a secluded community in southeast Imo state, at least 13 family members—four of whom were children—died after breathing in poisonous fumes from their power generator while they slept. About 40% of Nigerians' electricity demands are met by backup generators, per a recent International Energy Agency (IEA) report. Despite being a large supplier of gas and oil, Nigeria frequently has irregular grid power supplies. Recently, in an effort to reduce high fuel prices and move the nation toward greener energy, President Bola Tinubu ordered all government organizations to exclusively buy natural gas-powered cars and generators.
