Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, was detained by police for a while and interrogated about her gun ownership; she was eventually freed from custody. Significant political personalities have strongly condemned the incident, which happened on Friday at the Cantonments Police Station in Accra, and it has sparked a wave of political controversy.
The former president of the NDC and current presidential candidate for the party, John Dramani Mahama, responded to the arrest of Ms. Naa Koryoo by the police in a timely and decisive manner. In an array of declarations on social media Mr. Mahama expressed his disapproval of the arrest and the involvement that National Security Minister Albert Kan Dapaah and Inspector General of Police George Akuffo Dampare had played in the incident.
Mr. Mahama contended that Ms. Naa Koryoo's incarceration was unjustified and that the National Security Secretariat's measures only serve to exacerbate political tensions needlessly. As the country enters crucial election processes, he underlined the necessity for the police force and the IGP to fend off manipulation by the government and stressed the significance of preserving peace and stability.
Many people have found resonance in the former president's words, which highlight broader worries about the politicization of Ghana's law enforcement organizations. The arrest and subsequent release of Ms. Naa Koryoo have brought attention to the fine line that must be drawn between maintaining political freedoms and guaranteeing security. In line with Mr. Mahama's views, the National Democratic Congress has called for increased accountability and openness in the security agencies' operations.
They emphasize that perceived intimidation or improper influence on political candidates, in whatever form, can have far-reaching consequences for democracy.
