Ex-UK High Commissioner to Ghana: A Disgrace After the incident in Mexico, Jon Benjamin finally speaks

0

After being fired due to misbehavior in Mexico, former UK High Commissioner to Ghana Jon Benjamin—dubbed as "most reckless"—has revealed his future plans.

Jon Benjamin, the former UK top diplomat was fired for ‘jokingly’ pointing an assault rifle at a local embassy employee during an official trip to dangerous northern Mexican states.

He is no longer listed as the Mexico ambassador on the UK government’s website which says “he was” a High Commissioner.

Since his sacking from Mexico by the UK government last week, Jon Benjamin has disabled comments on his social media and made his very active twitter page private. Visitors are no longer able to access his old tweets where he made several controversial tweets.

Jon Benjamin has however provided an update to his followers since he was sacked from his post at Mexico. On LinkedIn the now former top diplomat indicated that he no longer works as UK High Commissioner to Mexico.

Next he updated his profile to indicate he is “in transition”. He didn’t provide any further details of what transition he is engaged in.

Many have wondered whether he on transition to finally retire from the service or to face further disciplinary sanctions after being the name His Majesty’s Government into disrepute.

On LinkedIn, the diplomat’s last post was about a month ago when he wished his old mother a happy birthday. At the time he was UK HC to Mexico.

He posted a picture of him and his mother in a selfie pose with the following message:

“Happy Birthday to my Mum, Edith Benjamin (Landau), who is 96 years old today and still in great shape for such an advanced age. Feliz cumpleaños para mi querida mamá quien celebra su aniversario 96 el día de hoy en muy buena forma física y mental.”

Jon Benjamin is not new to controversy as he was often in the news for the wrong reasons due to his political commentary on issues during his time in Ghana.

The career diplomat has been the UK ambassador to Mexico since 2021, after previously serving in Turkey, Indonesia, and the United States and Ghana were he was labeled as “most reckless”.

In 2016, Some Ghanaians on Twitter were outraged by a tweet by Jon Benjamin the then British High Commissioner to Ghana, in which he seemed to be taking a dig at the then President John Mahama.

In a tweet, Mr. Benjamin wondered if the dry dusty harmattan air had been ushered in by an inauguration from Mahama.

Ghanaians on social media said Mr. Benjamin was just trolling President Mahama for his many inaugurations of projects ahead of the December 7 elections.
